Glacier Refrigerated Services Corp.
The cold storage facility presently accommodates a segment of leading food manufacturers and traders that has filled up 95% of its storage space.
Glacier was adjudged as the best performing cold storage facility in the double AA category by the National Meat Inspection Services under the Department of the Philippines on the year 2007. Glacier was also a national finalist in the best cold storage facility nation wide.
Apart from the robust performance this 2007, Glacier has formed close alliances with various leading food processors and exporters this 2008 to expand cold storage operations and take advantage of technologies that will eventually lead to profit optimization.
• Location & Environment
- The cold storage facility would consist of a building to be constructed in the proposed project site, a 2,500 square meter leased lot located at Lot 94A, Electronics Road , FTI Complex in Taguig, Metro Manila. Three thousand (3,000) square meters are devoted to the cold storage facility structure and the rest are for logistical and expansion purposes.
- The site was chosen for its proximity and accessibility and the possible savings coming from a matching power plant project of PNKC that Glacier will use.
- Adequate power and water supply is always available in the area. The roads going in and out of the location are in good condition.

• Operations
- Glacier will primarily be a cold storage for anything from raw materials to the finished products ready for delivery to the consumer where fresh, frozen or deep-frozen products from the field, sea or processing plant will be stored for various lengths of time.
- CFMC will be the toll processing plant or a central kitchen which will subject all raw material to a boiling, cutting, sorting, filling, pasteurizing, canning and packaging process. The final product is an accordance with the product specifications that was approved by sales and marketing.
- Other activities to be done in the cold storage include
- Pre-cooling;
- Blast Freezing; and
- Processes such as deboning, repacking, marinating, smoking, etc.
- It is projected that capacity utilization shall be an average of 80% on the first year of operation and 100% in the succeeding years. Operation shall be for 24 hours each day.
- Glacier will adopt an inventory management system which will provide management and clients with up to date information on the level and state of their products as well as provide excellent service by minimizing spoilage. A “First In First Out” (FIFO) system of unloading the stored products is to be implemented. The FIFO method will minimize spoilage since the products that arrive first for storage will also be taken out first. The system is also capable of alerting the clients ahead of time when their inventory level reaches the reorder point thus avoiding stockouts.
• Facilities
- The entire building housing the cold storage facilities shall have an area of 3,000 square meters consisting of:
- Five (5) cold storage rooms, measuring 15 by 17.5 by 5 meters height equivalent to 1,312.5 cubic meters each and have a total holding capacity of 500 metric tons.
- Two (2) rooms for blast freezing operations, measuring 6 by 6 by 5 meters height equivalent to 180 cubic meters each and has a total holding capacity of 10 metric tons. Temperature in this area is maintained at around -40° C.
- One (1) processing room with a capacity of 967.5 cubic meters. This is the area where products may be properly prepared before being taken inside the cold storage. Some activities include pre-cooling, deboning, washing, repacking, marinating, smoking, etc. temperature in this area is maintained at around +80 C.
- Other facilities include loading and unloading areas, an anteroom, an administration office, and machine room.
- Pre-fabricated sandwich insulation panels donning the walls, ceilings, doors, and floors are made of polyurethane material sealed with mastic to serve as vapor barrier. It is usually the preferred material for insulation for its reliability and durability.
- Other facility accessories include standard clear strip curtains, pressure relief port, aluminum profile, coving, silicone sealant, etc.
- The entire cold storage facility will consume about 130,000 KWH per month. Glacier estimates that upon completion of the power plant that Lazard will build adjacent to the project site, it will result in a 20% power cost savings.
